Scope/General

While our office is located in Budapest, Hungary, our work spans from local, to national, regional, and global levels. We also work with organizations and individuals from all sectors. These include non-governmental organizations (NGO's), community groups, local/national/regional/supranational governments, universities, media, businesses, individuals, and of course, the general public. We welcome contact from any and all of the aforementioned actors who are interested in working with EMLA. Contact

Contracts/Tenders

EMLA is commonly contracted by the Hungarian Ministry of Environment to produce studies, environmental legislation, and other items utilizing our expertise in public participation and environmental issues. We have also recently received tenders from the Dutch government and from the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) for similar work.

With the development of our Scientific Branch (focusing on environmental management) to include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) expertise and technology, we are eager to expand our working relationships to the business sector where we have begun providing information sessions and collaboration on cases and projects. Joint Projects

At any given time, EMLA works on an assortment of joint projects ranging from local, grass-roots initiatives to international projects with partners from several countries. We are currently working on a major project with the World Resources Institute of Washington, D.C. The project will result in a system of indicators and rankings designed to measure the actual practice of public participation in environmental matters all over the world.

If your organization would like to work with EMLA on a project, please contact us with a brief description of the following: the proposed project, your organization, and potential or secured sources of funding. We welcome your inquiry. Contact

Internships

EMLA offers a variety of internships based on the work we are doing during a given period and on the interests of the student. We believe in providing strong mentoring and valuable work experience for every intern we accept. In the past we have hosted interns from Columbia University Law School and from various universities throughout Hungary. We will consider interns in several areas including, but not limited to: international and environmental law, environmental management, non-profit management, website programming/development, finance, MIS, community outreach/grassroots organizing, PR/media relations, translation, and any other field which proves both interesting to the applicant and important for EMLA's work.

We generally host interns during the summer, but we will also consider applicants for semester-long or academic year-long programs and for either full or part time positions. Although we are unable to provide an intern stipend at this time, we may be able to assist you in locating housing and other logistics. We welcome applicants from throughout Hungary and from all over the world. We are pleased to accept inquiries from both individual students and from schools and universities seeking to set up internships or internship programs with us. Individual students should send a resume and letter of interest by email or regular post outlining your area(s) of interest, proposed time frame, and what you hope to offer and achieve at EMLA. University staff should send a brief inquiry as an initial contact. Contact

Professional Exchange

EMLA is pleased to consider inquiries for professional exchanges from both the non-governmental sector and from businesses. We believe that such exchanges are mutually beneficial and especially important for sharing best practices across sectors and across state boundaries. Thus far we have exchanged with the FARN-Sustentar of Argentina. Please contact us well in advance of a proposed exchange program so that we can arrange to best utilize your time at EMLA and vice versa. Contact

Forming an Organization

EMLA routinely assists local groups in formally organizing themselves as grassroots organizations. This usually occurs when an environmental crisis threatens a certain community or neighborhood. We are pleased, however, to consult with local groups at any stage of their development or circumstances. Contact

Use of EMLA Library

At the EMLA office, we have a small library that is strong in public participation, environmental impact assessment, and European Union approximation materials from the Hungarian perspective. We also house our closed case and project files in the library. Any scholar with a legitimate interest in this material may utilize the EMLA library for research purposes. Most of the material is in Hungarian, some in English, and a smaller amount in German. Please contact us with a brief description of your research proposal, and we will let you know if our library can serve you in your work. Contact
